Background of the study
Semantic networks, which represent the relationships between concepts and meanings, are increasingly shaped by digital communication. In Nigeria, platforms like Facebook and Twitter provide rich data for examining how semantic networks evolve in real time. Users create and share content that interconnects ideas through hashtags, memes, and other symbolic markers, thus constructing dynamic semantic fields (Chinwe, 2023). Facebook’s extended posts and Twitter’s concise messages both contribute to this evolving network, albeit through different communicative styles. This study investigates how digital communication on these platforms impacts the formation and evolution of semantic networks. It examines the ways in which meanings are negotiated, reinforced, and transformed through online interactions, thereby providing insights into the cognitive and cultural processes underlying digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2024). By comparing Facebook and Twitter, the research aims to delineate the similarities and differences in semantic evolution across platforms and to explore the implications for broader communication practices in Nigerian society (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although digital communication is known to influence semantic networks, there is limited research on how platforms like Facebook and Twitter specifically contribute to semantic change in Nigeria. Existing studies often overlook the nuanced differences between the platforms’ effects on meaning construction, resulting in an incomplete understanding of digital semantic evolution. This gap poses challenges for linguists and communication scholars attempting to model semantic networks in the context of rapid digital interaction. The lack of comparative analysis limits our ability to understand how varying platform features shape semantic associations and cultural narratives (Adeola, 2023). This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the impact of digital communication on semantic networks in Nigerian online discourse.
Objectives of the study
1. To evaluate the impact of Facebook and Twitter on semantic networks in Nigerian discourse.
2. To compare the semantic associations emerging from each platform.
3. To develop insights into the evolution of digital semantics.
Research questions
1. How do Facebook and Twitter shape semantic networks in Nigerian online discourse?
2. What similarities and differences exist in semantic evolution on these platforms?
3. How can these insights inform broader theories of digital communication?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores how digital communication on Facebook and Twitter shapes semantic networks in Nigeria. The findings will contribute to theoretical models of semantic evolution and provide practical insights for educators and communication professionals adapting to digital language trends. The research deepens our understanding of meaning construction in digital spaces and informs policy and academic discourse (Emeka, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing digital communication on Facebook and Twitter and excludes other platforms and offline interactions.
